Introduction

 Hello Everyone! My name is Katie, and I am from Hutchinson KS. I am not sure where I will end up in the future, but I will most likely be staying in Kansas and possibly heading to the Kansas City area.

Something I am passionate about is animals. Ever since I can remember, my love in life has been animals; from the toys I played with, the movies I watched, books I read, and the birthdays spent at the zoo. I have always known my future career would have something to do with animals, whether I was cleaning up after them as a zookeeper or studying them in some way. 

I am interested in biology in general because it is the science of the natural world. I love animals, plants, and just being in nature in general, so I have always found biology to be my favorite subject.

Evolution effects everyone every day when you think about it from a human's evolutionary timeline. We evolved to make simple tools, and could then farm, and then we could build things to help us farm, and make weapons, and use tools to make more tools, and create buildings, and our brains kept evolving until we now have huge cities filled with technology and electronics everywhere. It's crazy to think about sometimes (at least for me it is) about where we came from and how far we have evolved from those early people.

I hope to gain some R skills in this class, as it is just a good skill to have in this profession. I also would like to improve the way I think by thinking deeper thoughts, and really thinking about the why behind the questions. I have always had trouble thinking deeply in classes and partaking in class discussions simply because my brain doesn't really work like that. However, I know if I sit and think long enough about something I can sometimes come up with an answer. I'm hoping this class will increase my answering speed for the more thought-provoking questions.

    Hey Katie! Great to hear that we have some things in common - I was also one of those zoo kids lol. This is definitely a fun class for those of us with a broad interest in biology, as our examples are very diverse! As for discussions, I'm excited to see what you bring to the table! These blogs should be ideal for getting your gears turning - but don't stress too much about talking fast. You have a whole week to think and respond, because we really do want you to think deep. And if you're ever stuck without a clue, hit up Libby, Michi, or me - we'd be happy to get your brain rolling in the right direction!

    Hey Katie!
    We also have quite a bit in common as well. I love how passionate you are about animals and wanting to continue that in you future career. I also am not sure where PA school will take me, but I am open to many different options! I can relate with what you said about biology being your favorite subject. I love learning about how certain processes in our bodies work and how they come together to keep us alive. This was something that drew me into the medical field. I am also very excited to get the ball rolling in this class!

    I enjoyed how you connected evolution and technology! I never thought about it like that, but then when I thought about it more, I realized it's a really big part of how humans have changed.

    Hi Katie,
    Animals and nature are two of my favorite things as well. I think that's what makes us pretty lucky as biologists, we get to spend a lot of time studying nature and discuss it with other people just as passionate. I was wondering, what is the meaning behind your blog title, "Twinning is Winning"?

  I think the rate of speciation depends on the variables involved, and what type of speciation it is. Obviously, speciation cannot occur overnight, but it also doesn't have to take centuries at a time; it's a highly variable process. You Take My Breath Away... No Wait, That's Asthma

 As someone who struggles with asthma, (as does my sister), I thought this would be a fitting "disease" to look at. I have a much more moderated case than my sister, as she is on multiple daily medications for it, and was once hospitalized when we were five. My mom was asthmatic when she was young, but mostly grew out of it. Asthma is a condition in which your airways are restricted and can sometimes form a mucus-like substance. This then leads to the inability to catch one's breath, wheeziness, and coughing. Triggers can include environmental things like cold air, allergens, and smoke, and it is a heritable condition. Many cases of asthma are in children, being 6 million of the 26 million people effected by it. Cases have steadily risen since the 1980's, as has the death rate from asthma. Pipefish Are Weird, Huh?

  After watching the video, its no secret that the pipefish is a rather unique organism. With the males being the less colorful, more sought after individual, it is backwards than what we normally experience in the animal kingdom. It definitely makes me question how something like this arose.  I think that possibly a reason for this might be that the number of females might outnumber the males, so the males have to be selective with who they want to pass their genes on with. The female courtship might have evolved due to this necessity to be chosen to breed with, and to make themselves more appealing to the males. I don't know if there's anything necessarily about the pipefish's biology that supports this hypothesis, other than the males are the dull and drab ones while the females are boots the house down mama, yes God, slay queen.
